Small-bowel ulceration induced by potassium chloride.

چکیده
achieved simply by stopping therapy until symptoms subsideusually in four to five days-and then resuming therapy gradually with increasing doses over several weeks. We have used n-pen. successfully now in two patients with welldocumented histories of penicillin allergy. Previously it was our belief that D-pen. would be effective only in preventing de novo stone formation or progression of stones already formed. Therefore patients with calculi and pyelonephritis-a complication we not infrequently encounterwere rendered stone-free surgically in order to maximize chances for eradicating infection with selected antibiotics. Our success in dissolving stones in each of these four patients has led us now to be more conservative in recommending operation to patients with nephrolithiasis complicated by pyelonephritis. So far we have not encountered any patient whose stones proved refractory to dissolution when D-pen. was added to the conventional programme.

A case of small bowel perforation.
RECENTLY attention has been drawn to the possible association of small bowel ulceration and oral administration of thiazide combined with enteric coated potassium chloride (Brit. med. J., 1964). Baker and his colleagues (1964) were recorded to have encountered twelve cases of small bowel ulceration, eleven of which were under treatment with the above combination of drugs. The following case was...
متن کاملIschaemic colitis.
THE CONCEPT of ischaemia as a cause of colitis is a relatively new one (Marston et al., 1966). It seems to be an uncommon type of colitis and is certainly much less frequent than ulcerative colitis and segmental colitis due to Crohn's disease. However, it is possible that in large general hospitals, dealing particularly with geriatric patients, ischaemic colitis may be recognized more frequentl...
متن کاملDiazoxide, a KATP Channel Opener, Prevented Ethanol-Induced Gastric Ulceration in Rats
Ethanol-induced acute gastric ulceration (EIGU) is widely studied. ATP dependent potassium channel (KATP) modulators are thought to interfere with some physiologic functions of the stomach. We have studied the effects of different doses of KATP modulators (diazoxide as agonist and glibenclamide as antagonist) on EIGU in rats. Gastric lesions were quantified. Fasting blood glucose (FBS) levels w...
متن کاملSelye's general adaptation syndrome: stress-induced gastro-duodenal ulceration and inflammatory bowel disease.
Hans Selye in a note to Nature in 1936 initiated the field of stress research by showing that rats exposed to nocuous stimuli responded by way of a 'general adaptation syndrome' (GAS). One of the main features of the GAS was the 'formation of acute erosions in the digestive tract, particularly in the stomach, small intestine and appendix'. This provided experimental evidence for the view based ...

Hypokalemic periodic paralysis is anautosomal dominantdisease characterized by muscle weakness or paralysis with a matching fall in blood potassium levels. Paralysis attacks often occur in adolescence and are induced by strenuous exercise followed by rest, high carbohydrateor high sodiummeal content, sudden changes in temperature, and even excitement, noise, flashing lights and cold temperature...
